Makeup Brush Sets Under $20: What You Get and What to Skip

A generation ago, cheap makeup brushes meant scratchy bristles, shedding, and a faint chemical smell. Synthetic fiber technology quietly fixed most of that. Today's better sub-$20 sets are legitimately usable — but the category is also flooded with sets that exist only to look impressive in a product photo.

Piece count is the wrong metric

A "32-piece professional set" sounds like value, but most faces need about six brushes: a fluffy powder brush, an angled blush brush, a flat foundation brush or sponge, a fluffy eyeshadow blender, a flat shader, and something small for detail work. Sets padded past a dozen pieces are usually duplicating shapes in slightly different sizes to inflate the count. A well-made 8-piece set beats a mediocre 30-piece set every time.

What to check in the listing

Care makes cheap brushes last

Washed every week or two with gentle soap and dried flat, a decent budget set lasts a year or more. Left dirty, even expensive brushes degrade and irritate skin. The habit matters more than the price tag.

When brush sets cross our feed, we favor the compact sets with strong review histories over the photogenic wall-of-brushes listings — the discount percentage means nothing if half the set never leaves the pouch.
